Participants were 193 children from urban Sydney, Australia, who were block-randomized to a 10-week group-based program of ACT or CBT or a 10-week waitlist control (WLC). Completers included 157 children (ACT = 54, CBT = 57, WLC = 46; M = 11 years, SD = 2.76; 78% Caucasian, 58% female). Pretreatment, posttreatment, and 3 months posttreatment assessments included clinician/self/parent-reported measures of anxiety, quality of life (QOL; anxiety interference, psychosocial and physical health-related QOL), and acceptance/defusion outcomes. Completer and intention-to-treat analyses revealed that ACT and CBT were both superior to WLC across outcomes, reflecting statistically and clinically significant differences, with gains maintained at 3 months posttreatment. Both completer and intention-to-treat analyses found ACT and CBT to produce similar outcomes. There was some support for ACT having greater effect sizes for QOL outcomes but not for avoidance/fusion. Although this study does not suggest that ACT is equivalent to CBT or should be adopted in its place, it does provide evidence that ACT might be another empirically supported treatment option for anxious youth. Further research is needed to replicate these findings.]]> Wed 22 Jan 2020 12:13:08 AEDT ]]> A randomised controlled trial of acceptance and commitment therapy for anxious adolescents: effectiveness and mechanisms for change https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:22451 Wed 05 Dec 2018 17:46:53 AEDT ]]> Development and evaluation of an individualised, app-delivered psychological flexibility skills training intervention for medical student burnout and wellbeing https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55946 Thu 11 Jul 2024 12:54:07 AEST ]]> Mechanisms of change: exploratory outcomes from a randomised controlled trial of acceptance and commitment therapy for anxious adolescents https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:27174 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:31:43 AEDT ]]> Acceptance and commitment therapy for children: a systematic review of intervention studies https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:28980 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:29:26 AEDT ]]> Acceptance and commitment therapy in the treatment of anxiety: a systematic review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23495 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:13:03 AEDT ]]> Exploring the use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) within a clinical eating disorder group program for adults https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:30636 Fri 10 Aug 2018 15:43:38 AEST ]]>
